Frequently asked questions
What is the Fitzpatrick skin type scale?
It’s a dermatology classification from Type I (very fair, always burns) to Type VI (deeply pigmented, never burns), based on how your skin reacts to sun. It’s the standard way to personalise burn-time and SPF advice.
Why does my skin type matter for tanning?
Your skin type sets your Minimal Erythemal Dose — how much UV your skin can take before burning. A Type I burns several times faster than a Type IV under the same sun, so the safe time is very different.
Can my skin type change?
Your underlying type is genetic and stays the same. A tan temporarily raises your tolerance a little, but it doesn’t move you up the scale — and it’s still UV damage.
